Art & Money! ‘Da Vinci of Debt’ Is The World’s Most Expensive Artwork

For those who are unfamiliar, Da Vinci of Debt is an installation by Natural Light that is on display at New York City’s Grand Central Terminal. Today the word comes down that the artwork has become the world’s most expensive artwork. The installation serves as a commentary on the student debt crisis, aiming to bring attention to the issue in the process.

The artwork is a cascading design that features 2,600 real college diplomas. Each diploma is roughly valued at a little over $180,000, making the installation valued at $470 million USD. This means that it’s $20 million USD over the most expensive painting ever sold, Leonardo Da Vinci’s 600-year-old Salvator Mundi.

Daniel Blake, VP of marketing for Natural Light, spoke about the installation. He stated: “College debt is one of the most important and, unfortunately, one of the most crippling issues for Americans today.” Mr. Blake went on to add, “We chose art as the medium to amplify the program this year because we saw that the costs of the art world were a great analogy for the sky-high cost of attending a four-year college.” Blake hopes the artwork will bring attention to the issue of student debt and hopes graduates can “look back on their college experience fondly.”
