A First Look | Anthony Hopkins & Jonathan Pryce Star As ‘The Two Popes’

The good folks over at Netflix are bringing big things in terms of original programming. Today they are back with a look at one we’re interested in checking out, ‘The Two Popes.’ The upcoming film finds Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce starring as Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. Directed by Academy Award nominee Fernando Meirelles, the film tells quite an interesting tale of Cardinal Bergoglio and Pope Benedict.

The trailer finds Cardinal Bergoglio requesting permission from Pope Benedict to retire. Pope Benedict invites him to the Vatican, revealing a big secret that shakes the foundation of the Catholic Church. As the two men get to know each other, Benedict informs Bergoglio of his potential to become the next Pope. While Bergoglio initially doesn’t want the position, he eventually warms up to the idea.

The film made its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival over the summer. This is certainly one we’ll be checking for upon its release. Such an interesting story brought to life by two incredible actors. We can expect to premiere in select theaters on November 27th. Check out the new trailer below and look for The Two Popes when it arrives on Netflix December 20th.
