It’s not every day that you have the opportunity to own a piece of history. Well, today is one of those days! Christie’s is gearing up for its Voyage To Another World: The Victor Martin-Malburet Photograph Collection sale. The collection features 700 lots dedicated to the golden age of space exploration. With nearly 2,400 vintage original photographs featured in the sale, the collection is touted as the most comprehensive private collection of NASA photographs ever presented at auction.
Astronaut-photographers captured the images during the early years of space travel. Highlights include the Earth’s first images from space and images of the Moon’s surface, and much more. The collection even includes images of the dark side of the Moon, spacewalks, moonwalks, and more. There is even a selection of large-format photographs specially produced by NASA.
Christie’s released a statement regarding the auction and the images. It reads: “In a time when photography was still analog, requiring light-sensitive chemistry, film and photographic papers, the astronauts were instructed by NASA, Hasselblad, Kodak, Zeiss specialists and by Life and National Geographic photographers such as Ralph Morse and Dean Conger.” The statement goes on to state: “Through their cameras, the astronauts-turned-artists were able to convey to mankind the beauty and profundity of their experience into space, forever changing the way we see ourselves and our place in the universe.”
The collection was assembled over 15 years by Victor Martin-Malburet. Voyage to Another World Part I will be open for bidding from November 6th to 19. Find out more about the auction and its contents from Christie’s. In the meantime, keep it locked with The Culture Curators for more art news coming very soon.
