A Look Inside | The Appleton Museum Of Art Presents “Across the Atlantic: American Impressionism Through the French Lens”

Known as a major cultural center in the heart of Florida, The Appleton Museum of Art offers an array of art and artistic expression. The museum’s vision is to be a leading cultural center that enriches the quality of life for the people of Central Florida and beyond. The museum recently opened a new exhibition known as “Across the Atlantic: American Impressionism Through the French Lens.” We had the opportunity to take a closer look at the exhibit before it opened to the public. Upon getting the backstory and history of the collection and the works of art presented, it was apparent how important and how special this collection is. Not only to the history of art and Impressionism but also to the Appleton Museum of Art.

This stunning showcase draws mostly from the collection of the Reading Public Museum in Reading, Pennsylvania. The collection explores the path to Impressionism through the 19th century in France. It also takes a closer look at the relationship between French Impressionism of the 1870s and 1880s. As well as the American interpretation of the style in the decades that followed.

Now At The Appleton Museum of Art!

The exhibition is host to more than 65 paintings and works on paper help tell the story of the “new style” of painting that developed at the end of the 19th century. “Across the Atlantic” features works by artists who paved the way to Impressionism, such as members of the Barbizon School. Those included in the exhibition are Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Narcisse Diaz de la Peña, Charles-François Daubigny, and more. Some of the key artists featured in the exhibition include Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, Victor Vignon, Albert Lebourg, among others. A host of American artists embraced the style, including the likes of John Singer Sargent, William Merritt Chase, and John Henry Twachtman.

“Across the Atlantic: American Impressionism Through the French Lens”

American collectors and taste-makers were among the first to begin collection Impressionist paintings. As more American artists traveled to France around the turn of the century, more embraced the new style, catching instances and moments in time in a beautiful and colorful form. Each work evokes a special feeling and allure. The opportunity to examine these works of art up close allows for a better appreciation of the craftsmanship. The details, the incredible colors, and the use of brush strokes are captivating. All of these elements come together to create timeless images that are compelling, charming, and incredible.

“Across the Atlantic: American Impressionism Through the French Lens” is a beautiful showcase of art. The history behind the work is just as intriguing as the art itself. Take a minute to find out more about the art and the artists. We have included an inside look at the exhibition in the images below. However, the photos do not do these works of art any justice.
