A Look Into Art | San Francisco’s de Young Museum To Showcase Frida Kahlo Exhibition

The world seems to be on hold thanks to the COVID-19 lockdowns around the globe. The good folks over at de Young Museum in San Francisco are looking to the future, a time after coronavirus. The museum is preparing for a major exhibition dedicated to artist Frida Kahlo. The exhibition is titled “Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving.” The showcase will explore how Kahlo constructed her identity through self-fashioning. It will also serve as an insightful look into her complex themes of disability and ethnicity.

Details include elements of her art and personal life while providing a closer look at the artist herself. There will even be a selection of Kahlo’s possessions from her home in La Casa Azul will. These personal belongings include photographs, letters, jewelry, cosmetics, and intricate garments. A total of 34 works will be on display as well. These include drawings, paintings, and a lithograph that span the artist’s life.

Thomas P. Campbell, Director, and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, spoke about the upcoming exhibition. He stated: “Reinforcing our institution’s long-standing close ties to Mexico, we are infinitely honored and thrilled to present Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving at the de Young museum.” Mr. Campbell further explained, “The landmark exhibition paints a multifaceted portrait of one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century, whose vivid work provides an important window into Mexican culture, and whose extraordinary persona continues to be a source of inspiration to so many.”
