Another Addition To The Team | Facebook Just GIFs Bigger Every Day

A well-played GIF response on Facebook has become both a catalyst for deeper conversation or an instant mic drop and reason to say no more. When an IG group message is popping off, it’s usually thanks in part to those wonderfully mispronounced lofi silent videos from GIPHY, the .GIF website.

It only seems right that those GIFs are part of the Facebook family now. Pre-Pandemic talks had the two entities discussing a partnership, but much like everything else, they’ve turned into so much more. Acquisition is now the name of the game. As explained by Facebook itself, “We’ve used GIPHY’s API for years, not just on Instagram, but in the Facebook app, Messenger and WhatsApp.”

Giphy isn’t going anywhere, though. They expect to retain their own branding and will “operate its library” of animated images independently of FB. Like the iMessage app, for instance. Also, its .GIF uploading functionality and community features will reportedly remain unchanged.
