Blurred Lines | The California Meadow House By Jim Olsen

There’s never been a time when we were more aware of what we wanted in a “dream house” than right now. Given the chance to do it again, I’m sure we’d at least change up a couple of lampshades or something. Maybe an air plant in the window? That’s because we aren’t living in the California Meadow House by the visionary architect Jim Olsen.

The estate was envisioned as a single continuous flowing expression. Linking architecture, interior design, art, and landscape as it subtly exists amongst the natural elements. Reflecting pools accentuate views that extend from a unified central living area. Vistas into gardens and the nearby Santa Cruz Mountains are uninterrupted from inside as well as the extensive outdoor living spaces. The three auxiliary buildings complete the design that blends the home into its surroundings.

Retracting window walls allow the line between the inside and outside to be blurred a bit. Custom furniture fills the living spaces in an arraignment that allows for optimal use of natural light and breezes from open windows. A natural color palette only further incorporates the union between the dwelling and the stunning spot it sits on. If that view were ever to get less than spectacular, The home also features an art collection curated by Jim Olsen as well.

The 3.5-acre site houses a vineyard and old-growth Olive trees on one side and a more wild, natural meadow on the other. The common areas of the home like the dining, living and entertainment areas, are in the building amongst the cultivated portion of the site. Reflection pools and a slight slope connect and lead the way to the more personal areas. An office and bedrooms are situated in the uncultivated meadow space.

Some of the more impressive features will surely go unnoticed as the home was designed for more than aesthetic pleasure. The estate was designed with sustainability in mind as well. Several high-performance systems used at and around the California Meadow House produce more energy than the estate uses.
