Celebrating Via Art | Daniel Arsham Reveals ‘Eroded Brillo Boxes’

The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh is gearing up for its 25th anniversary. In doing so, the museum has partnered with Daniel Arsham for a specially commissioned work. Dubbed ‘Eroded Brillo Boxes,’ the designs are set to go up for sale at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Day Auction. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the museum’s education and exhibition program, which continues Warhol’s legacy of supporting living artists.

‘Eroded Brillo Boxes’ are estimated to fetch up to $70,000 USD. The sculpture pays homage to Warhol’s groundbreaking ‘Brillo Box’ series from the mid-1960s. The pop artist’s replica of a popular soap pad product of the ’50s showcases his interest in consumer products. He then went on to explore ‘Campbell’s Soup Cans’ and ‘3 Coke Bottles’ in later pieces. Mr. Arsham’s sculpture features boxes in a process similar to a factory assembly line. Arsham crafts the Brillo boxes from blue calcite, quartz, and hydrostone.

They are then completed with his signature eroded aesthetic, giving the work a compelling look. In the style of his ‘Fictional Archeological’ series, he constructs the boxes from a futuristic perspective. The artist explained, “the objects are made to appear as if they have been uncovered on an archaeological site in the future, crystallized and calcified.”

The Daniel Arsham sculpture solidify Warhol’s legacy as a canonical artist while also questioning the future of the art object. The sculpture is set to be auctioned off at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Day Auction on November 15. Take a look at the piece in the image up top and find out more from Sotheby’s immediately. In the meantime, keep it locked with The Culture Curators for much more from the art department coming very soon.
