Color & Design! Alejandro Cardenas Presents “Alexandria” At Almine Rech Gallery

The Chilean artist Alejandro Cardenas is known for his interdisciplinary artworks that include acrobatic, fluid characters and lush landscapes. The artist returns today with a look at a solo exhibition at New York City’s Almine Rech gallery. The show, entitled “Alexandria,” includes new abstract figures that are seen on paintings and sculptures. The exhibition explores a post-human world “wherein the relationship between human-forms and the environment is one of unity and coexistence,” describes the gallery in a statement.

The statement goes on to add, “The intellectual and cultural center of the ancient Mediterranean world for much of the Hellenistic age and known to be a place where scholarship of the East and the West was studied on an equal footing with the goal of creating a unified source of knowledge.” The gallery further added, “Cardenas’s new body of work, which comes at a time of profound global unrest that has resulted from rampant climate change, the ongoing health and economic crises, and social injustice, came forth as a way to reflect on the present moment.”

The statement further adds, “Unlike us, these faceless humanoids appear to lack all sensory organs, yet they are not deprived of their sensorial ability. Instead, they convey emotion through body language, resulting in a wide variety of suggested emotional expression.” The human-like forms and postures include narrow wire-frame sculptures and colorful patterns.

Take a closer look at the installation in the images and find out all about the exhibition via Almine Rech’s website. The exhibition will be on view through February 23, 2021. Keep it locked with The Culture Curators for more art exhibitions, installations, and news coming soon.
