Contemporary Creations | Shohei Otomo Reveals New Sumo Wrestler Sculpture

Japanese artist Shohei Otomo is known for his hyperrealistic ink drawings. The artist returns as he branches into sculpting with his newest release. The artist is set to debut a sumo wrestler sculpture at the opening of his upcoming exhibition “REIWA” at SHDW.gallery in Hong Kong. The sculpture, entitled There Is Nothing You Can Do To Hurt Me is 57 cm in height and 32 cm in width.

The sculpture is crafted from white resin, polished by hand while depicting a sumo wrestler with arms outstretched in a defiant pose. Otomo will release ten of the sculptures, each of which will be hand-signed and numbered. Otomo has also created an augmented reality filter for Instagram. The filter can be found by clicking on the filter icon @Shohei.Otomo, and will project the statue into your feed. The sculpture is just the latest from the artist, who is known for exceptionally creative work. He is also known as the son of the famous manga artist Katsuhiro Otomo.

Take a closer look at the There Is Nothing You Can Do To Hurt Me sculpture in the images. Look for the ten pieces to go on sale on October 25th. REIWA by Shohei Otomo will be on view in SHDW.gallery in Hong Kong from October 25 to November 9. The exhibition will then head to the gallery’s Melbourne location from November 22 to December 8.
