Expanding Options | Uber Acquires Postmates

The good folks over at Uber are back in the news, this time making moves and expanding their footprint. Today the word comes down that the ride sharing platform has purchased Postmates for $2.65B USD. The official news comes as the ride-sharing company looks to further its efforts in the delivery of groceries, essentials, and more. This also comes after months of rumors regarding a potential acquisition of Grubhub.

The company’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a statement, “Uber and Postmates have long shared a belief that platforms like ours can power much more than just food delivery.” The statement goes on to read, “They can be a hugely important part of local commerce and communities, all the more important during crises like COVID-19.”

The deal will find Postmates incorporated into the Uber Eats platform. The goal is to compliment the food delivery function with access to more shops. The Postmates app will continue to operate as a full takeover is coming in the first quarter of 2021. The move comes at a time when the public has turned to delivery and pickup services more. The Coronavirus pandemic has ushered in a new normal, and Uber’s ride business has been affected by it as well.

Uber is looking to remain competitive. UberEats introduced new delivery options, Direct and Uber Connect as well. This is big news and a smart move. Head over to Uber to find out more and keep it locked with The Culture Curators for more food and drink news coming very soon.
