Fix Your Face | This Is The CDC’s Tutorial On Making a Face Mask

What an interesting time we are living in huh? As we self-isolate and aim to curb the spread of COVID-19, things seem to change daily. Today, America’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is back in the news. This time around the CDC has released a video showing you how to make your own face mask. The clip is a showcase of how you can easily make your own face mask with items you can easily find at home. The tutorial follows from its official recommendation of using cloth face coverings in public.

The reasoning behind this move is that you could risk wider spread of COVID-19 just by chatting with acquaintances. The CDC stated that “a significant portion of individuals with coronavirus lack symptoms… [and] can transmit the virus to others before showing symptoms.” The announcement went on to add, “This means that the virus can spread between people interacting in close proximity—for example, speaking, coughing, or sneezing—even if those people are not exhibiting symptoms. In light of this new evidence, CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings.”

The video features US Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams as he shows how we can easily create our own mask. These can be crafted from an old scarf, bandana, hand towel or cut cloth from an old T-shirt. The simple design uses rubber bands to secure it to your face. However, Dr. Jerome Adams states that “[i]t is critical to emphasize that maintaining 6-feet social distancing remains important to slowing the spread of the virus.”

The CDC, nor The Culture Curators claim that cloth face masks are 100% effective. However, due to the scarcity of surgical masks and N-95 respirators, “[t]hose are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders.” CDC Director Robert Redfield added, “It’s not a decision to try to protect me from getting coronavirus. It’s to help modify spreading.” He went further and said, “And there is scientific data to show that when you aerosolized virus through a cloth barrier, you have a reduction in the amount of virus that gets through the other side.”
