Game Changers | UNIQLO Reveals “Re.UNIQLO” Sustainability Program

The creative minds over at UNIQLO are back and with some big news. The company has announced a new initiative to help reduce its global carbon footprint. The Re.UNIQLO program is a circular sustainability program that will take old threads from both UNIQLO and GU, bringing new life to these older garments. The program will recycle the material to make new clothing, new raw material and fuel (in Japan only), or reusing old clothing in the form of donating.

UNIQLO started collecting its used clothing back in 2006. Last year the company collected nearly 620,000 down jackets in half a year. Each piece goes through eighteen different sorting criteria from size, gender, season, climate, culture, and religion. The program serves as another example of UNIQLO’s efforts to keep its products out of landfills. This, coupled with their efforts on plastic reduction, shows the company’s seriousness about sustainability. The first product from the Re.UNIQLO program is set to drop this November.

The design will come as a 100-percent recycled down jacket. Find out more about the Re.UNIQLO program from UNIQLO and keep it locked with the Culture Curators for more style, streetwear, and sustainability news coming very soon.
