Gang Starr is back! If that doesn’t get you excited as a hip-hop fan, you’re not a hip-hop fan. Dj Premier and Guru, collectively known as Gang Starr are one of the single most important hip-hop groups in the game. Well, it’s been nearly sixteen years since their last album, and nine years since the tragic passing of Guru. Soon DJ Premier will release the final album from the seminal group, planning to do so later this Fall. Today Gang Starr is back with the lead single from their upcoming album.
The track is called “Family and Loyalty” featuring North Carolina’s own, J. Cole. The track finds the trio showing off their respective talents, serving up a smooth, soulful, jazzy cut in the process. “Family and Loyalty” is driven by some slick, incredibly smooth production from DJ Premier while Guru lives on through his delivery and lyrical content. J. Cole takes to the silky instrumental and flawlessly adds his appeal, adding a nice dose of lyricism along the way. Gang Starr is iconic, and J. Cole is undoubtedly on his path toward that rep.
