History of Style! Ralph Lauren Honors HBCUs In Style

The creative minds over at Ralph Lauren know style. Today they return with a new collection that draws inspiration from fashion styles worn in historically Black colleges between 1920 to 1950. The lineup pays homage to HBCUs Morehouse and Spelman College, honoring the contributions of Black Students through a modern iteration of American collegiate style. The new collegiate-inspired capsule will include various styles, from everyday wear items to suits, footwear, and accessories.

The first-of-its-kind collection designed by Black creatives, students, and alumni of the HBCU community offers outstanding attention to detail and exceptional quality. The piece features a vintage nod, bringing back an array of classic fabrics and designs. The tweed blazer look is complete with skirts and trousers, argyle socks, and much more. Vintage varsity sweaters include timeless details and Ralph Lauren’s design ethos, which makes good on a pledge the brand made to take action toward racial equality.

James Jeter, Ralph Lauren’s director of concept design and 2013 graduate of Morehouse College, spoke about the collection. He convinced Ralph Lauren that the styles would demonstrate that Black colleges are just as “aspirational and inspirational” as Ivy League schools. Jeter stated: “He didn’t realize that this history existed and…it really kind of opened up this entire world to be inspired by. Right now, we’re just talking about HBCUs and collegiate style, but the same could be true of Americana and quilting or the American West…this is only the beginning.”

Alongside the collection, the label is releasing an accompanying film titled A Portrait of the American Dream on March 28th and a commemorative yearbook on March 29th. Check out the new range in the images below and look for the collection to arrive on March 29th on Ralph Lauren and at Morehouse and Spelman campus bookstores. In the meantime, keep it locked with The Culture Curators for more style and fashion drops coming very soon.
