Holiday Art | Banksy’s ‘Scar of Bethlehem’

Banksy is back! Christmas is right around the corner and its a time for giving. The notorious street artist is in a giving mood, unveiling a new piece of art that was inspired by the holiday season. The ‘Scar of Bethlehem’ is an eye-catching reinterpretation of the traditional nativity scene. The scene features Mary and Joseph gathered around baby Jesus on the floor of a barn. Behind them, a large concrete wall is placed, pockmarked with bullet holes and more, as well as graffiti with the words “Love” and “Paix” (peace). There is also a shell explosion in four directions that leaves a large opening emulating the Star of Bethlehem.

The artwork is located inside Banksy’s Walled Off Hotel in the West Bank of Bethlehem. It emphasizes the concrete walls that separate the area from Israel. The hotel manager Wissam Salsaa spoke about the artwork. Salsaa stated: “It is a great way to bring up the story of Bethlehem, the Christmas story, in a different way — to make people think more.” The hotel was opened back in 2017 and was dubbed an “all-inclusive vandals resort” to shed light on the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Check out his latest work of art, the ‘Scar of Bethlehem’ in the image up top and look for much more from Banksy coming very soon. In the meantime, keep it locked with The Culture Curators for much more from the art department coming very soon.
