Immerse Yourself In Art | Gilles Barbier’s “Laughing at Clouds” Exhibition

The French contemporary artist known as Gilles Barbier is back. He’s known for his unique sculptures that focus on social convention. Today the artist is back with a look at his new body of work at The Chimney in Brooklyn. The exhibition is dubbed “Laughing at Clouds”. A showcase of a unique range of installations and works of art that is sure to captivate. The centerpiece of the show is an installation comprised of black levitating umbrellas mounted in varying heights.

This immersive piece recalls the famous painting ‘Golconda’ (1953) by René Magritte. The painting depicts a flurry of floating businessmen, paying homage to the “symbolism and otherworldliness of Mary Poppins’ enchanting story”. Alongside the umbrellas are white speech bubbles that mimic raindrops. The gallery spoke about the installation, focusing on the centerpiece of the show. They stated: “Tinted by Mary Poppins’ realm and childhood’s imagination, umbrellas become the object of teleportation and traveling vessels that allow the journey through alternate realities and times. Like whirling black holes, these protective shelters are portals that defy distance and the constraints of the body”.

Take a closer look at the “Laughing at Clouds” collection of art in the images below and learn more about the showcase by visiting The Chimney’s website. The exhibition is currently on display until December 15th. While you’re here, keep it locked with The Culture Curators for more modern and contemporary art coming very soon.
