Life On The Water | Waikato River Retreat

One would imagine an architect’s home to be unique in design and concept. Today we get a look at a beautiful home dubbed the Waikato River Retreat. This home is situated on the banks of New Zealand’s Waikato River. The home of an architect, the structure is modest and modern, an asymmetrical form clad in warm cedar screens. The contemporary design includes a Garapa timber deck that leads into the living areas.

The light-filled space is warm and welcoming. An inviting aesthetic comes from a massive central kitchen that lends itself to entertaining. The interior also includes a mezzanine, which boasts a Gaboon plywood wall that conceals the door leading to the bedrooms. The Tasmanian oak flooring is a nice contrast paired with the all-white palette. This bright, airy aesthetic makes for a gallery-like allure throughout the home. Walls of glazing look out onto the river, also opening to an outdoor terrace. From here, views of the Hakarimata ranges are seen, providing a great place for relaxing or entertaining.
