Paying Homage Via Art | Simone Leigh Reveals ‘Sentinel IV’ Sculpture

The American artist, Simone Leigh, is back in the news feed. The artist recently launched a limited edition sculpture, titled Sentinel IV. The sculpture will be offered in limited numbers and will benefit the racial justice organization Color of Change. The sculpture measures in at 20 inches tall and was inspired by an object used in fertility rituals.

The figure features a female body while boasting a spoon as its head. The combination forms with tools often reference spiritual or ceremonial objects. The sculpture provides a unique, abstract aesthetic that pays homage to the formal characteristics. The form is described in West African Art as a power object, something that acts either through formal significance or ritual use. The cast bronze edition was derived from the “parent” sculpture of the same name.

Take a closer look at Sentinel IV from Simone Leigh in the images above and find out more information on Hauser & Wirth’s website. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of the work will go to Color of Change. Keep it locked with The Culture Curators for more from the art department coming very soon.
