Known for creative style and bold quality, Balenciaga is back. This time around, the fashion label returns to promote LGBTQIA+ visibility with an eye-catching new Pride collection. The range features a bevy of options from baseball caps, hoodies, and shirts to waistbands, bras, thongs, and jockstraps. The collection includes the staple tee and hoodies in two styles.
One features varsity-style lettering that spells out “GAY PRIDE BALENCIAGA 2021,” while the other simply consists of the word “GAY” and a rainbow flag. Each piece features a simple supporting message for pride, while the rainbow flag is highlighted throughout. The waistband of men’s and women’s underwear is adorned with the flag, while other accessories such as socks, party bracelets, and fake fur shoulder strap coin purses make a nice touch.
On top of showing support via style, Balenciaga will donate 15 percent of the sale to the Trevor Project. Founded in 1998, the Trevor Project continues its mission to end LGBTQ youth suicide. Creative director Demna Gvasalia spoke about the collection in a statement. It reads: “I’m gay. I grew up in a society where I couldn’t have worn that, and there are places in the world that you cannot today. It’s important to push through against homophobia. I’m not someone who goes out in the street and shouts. But this is the political fashion activism I can do.”
