Reimagined Retreats | Project O Cabins

When we think of cabins, we think old, rustic dwellings with a certain, and undeniable charms. Who doesn’t love a good cabin? They’re quaint, cozy, comfortable, and a great way to break away from reality. Today we get a look at a beautiful modern example of the traditional cabin, the Project O Cabins. Designers Aleksi Hautamaki and Milla Selkimaki created this striking design. After purchasing a previously uninhabited island in the Finnish Archipelago National Park, the designers went to work, creating something unique.

Project O is named for the Swedish term for an island, boasting a pair of self-sustaining timber cabins situated on a rocky outcropping. The main living spaces are in one unit, while a workshop and sauna are in the other. Solar panels on the roof power the shelters and utilize the surrounding sea to supply water. The water is used for drainage, sinks, and toilets. Hot water, as well as heating for the floors,  are sourced from the sauna’s stove. The compact, minimal interior keeps the focus on the coastal landscape, offering unrivaled views of the area.

Take a closer look at Project O in the images below and find out more about the structure from their website. In the meantime, keep it locked here with The Culture Curators for more modern architecture coming very soon.
