Rural Luxury | The Glen Ellen Big Barn

Known for stunning, simple, modern architecture, Faulkner Architects are back in the news feed. Today we get a look at a unique dwelling that borrows from the agrarian vernacular of its rural surroundings. The Glen Ellen Big Barn is located in northern California. The structure is a converted tack barn that is now a stunning bunkhouse. The home features a simple rectangular for, outfitted with an asymmetrical gabled roof. The reclaimed redwood and corrugated Corten steel-clad exterior fit seamlessly with its surroundings. These details keep disruption to the site as minimal as possible.

The form is excavated uphill and cantilevers over the hillside. A steel bridge at the top of the hill gives the upper-level sleeping quarters access to the tack barn located beside it. The barn also features a restrained material, integrated gutters, and a lack of overhangs. This keeps the structure sleek and minimal, which continues inside. The California oak-lined floors are a nice touch, while the black steel windows frame in views of the landscape.

Take a few minutes and take a closer look at the Glen Ellen Big Barn below. Find out more about the design from Faulkner Architects and keep it locked with The Culture Curators for more modern architecture coming very soon.
