The Derby House

Outstanding architecture stands the test of time. Today we get a look at a stunning structure known as the Derby House. The home was built for James Daniel Derby in 1926. It was designed by Lloyd Wright, the son of icon Frank Lloyd Wright. The home has many eye-catching features. None more prevalent, however, than the ornate facade. The exterior features concrete volumes adorned with precast concrete tiles, which were inspired by Mayan architecture.

The garage and fireplace gates, French door grills, and closets reference the yucca plant, adding more detail throughout. The interior features open, naturally lit spaces and a fireplace with eight-foot-high wrought iron gates. The home’s hexagonal dining room is an interesting touch too. The property includes four adjacent lots, offering 1.5 acres in total, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
