The last few months have served as the beginning of a new chapter for Kyrie Irving. The NBA superstar signed with the Brooklyn Nets over the Summer and recently kicked off the new NBA Season. Today Kyrie is back in the news feed, linking up with Nike to introduce the Kyrie 6. The new sneaker, the latest in Kyrie’s range of signature creations, was designed by Benjamin Nethongkome. The Kyrie 6 brings together performance and style, designed especially for the unique style of play of Mr. Irving.
Nethongkome spoke about the design, opening about working with Kyrie in the past as well. He stated: “We’ve built a lot of trust over the last three shoes. I know what Kyrie wants from an overall feel. There is a certain formula: An extra-padded tongue, almost Nike SB style, and a cushy collar, combined with support in the midfoot.” The sneaker is host to a Traction 360 grip pattern, providing better court feel. The sneakers boast a new midfoot strap in place of the Kyrie 5‘s Venus Flytrap-inspired shroud, adding additional lockdown.
The curved outsole and the responsive articulated Air Zoom Turbo unit are a nice touch as well. The silhouette offers an eye-catching appeal. The design blends a heritage basketball footwear ethos with details and flourishes unique to Kyrie. Mr. Irving spoke about the sneakers, as well. He stated: “The Zoom Airbag, 360 traction, and the strap — the technology defines the functionality of the shoe.” He went on to add, “But it’s evolved into a beautiful design that incorporates different inspirations from past Nike shoes. What’s history without utilizing it and implementing it into your own style and your own swag?”
