Many ancient civilizations believed signs from the gods were sent to signal better times ahead or punish them for their misbehaving. These signs were often years apart and met with a cult-like appreciation: a blue moon, an albino buffalo, or perhaps an overly bountiful harvest of wheat. Well, gang, the God’s have seemingly smiled upon the year we won’t dare mention by name.
Behold! The McRib has been bestowed upon us once again from the alter of the golden arches. McDonald’s has noticed the struggle and thrown us a bone. Figuratively, of course. Everybody knows there’s no bone in that thing, like it or not. The fast-food item with the world’s most cult-like following is back on the menu after eight long years, what McDonald’s is calling the “sauciest moment of the year.” It’s coming back with a fun promotion in typical McDonald’s fashion and a chance to win one of 10,000 free sandwiches as part of the “Shave 4 McRib” sweepstakes.
The McRib Returns!
“Beard or no beard, prepare for the McRib with a shave – or even a facial mask – because anyone can participate, from your brother to your mother, sister-in-law or cousin’s roommate,” McDonald’s said in a news release Monday.
To enter, “post a picture of your cleanly-shaven or baby-smooth face on your public Twitter or public Instagram profile using #Shave4McRibSweepstakes and tag @mcdonalds,” the release said.
Undoubtedly, the timing here is symbolic. Whether it’s a sign of tides turning for the better or an omen that the end is genuinely near; it’s time to embrace McRib magic with that immediately recognizable seasoned boneless pork slathered in smoky, tangy barbecue sauce, topped with slivered onions and tart pickles and on that hoagie style sesame roll. Shave up, share it to your social media, and settle in to ride out the rest of this wild year with a limited-time offering of the McRib from McDonald’s.
