Welcome Back | Our Experience With The 2020 Toyota Supra GR

Toyota is a name with a reputation for quality, dependability, and reliability. It’s been a staple of the brand since its inception, one that continues to this day. 2020 is a big year for the automaker as they are bringing back an icon. 2020 marks the return of the legendary Toyota Supra. We recently had the opportunity to spend a few days putting the 2020 Toyota Supra GR to the test, and to say we were impressed would be an understatement. A lot has been said already about the new Supra, but this is our take as lifelong Toyota fans and Supra drivers.

2020 Toyota Supra GR

First things first, let’s talk about the new look. The 2020 Toyota Supra looks like nothing on the road, and it shouldn’t. Past iterations always remained an outstanding option on the streets, and the new generation is no different. The vehicle offers a sleek front end with aggressive styling that leads smoothing into the fender and hood. The front end is a bit longer than expected, though not out of proportion. The long hood rides subtly to the windshield, keeping the essence of the Supra alive with a low-slung approach. The roofline is host to an aerodynamic aesthetic that continues down the rear glass and into the back section of the car. The aggressive front clip lends a natural curve to the side panels and continues down the doors toward the rear tire. As the body cuts back toward the turn, the wide rear fenders add to the aerodynamics, keeping things sleek and sexy all the way around to the back. The rear of the car is flawlessly styled to complement the front end, also adding the aerodynamics of the vehicle.

2020 Toyota Supra: Power & Performance

In terms of power and performance, all Supra models with an eight-speed automatic and are offered only with rear-wheel drive. The inline-six provides ample power, doing so rather smoothly and quickly as well. The ride is capable of a 0-60 mph time of just 3.8 seconds while accelerating from zero to 100 mph in only 9.5 seconds. That puts the new Supra in the same league as the Chevy Corvette, the Porsche Cayman GTS, and the BMW M2 Competition. While there is no manual transmission option, there is a rumor that the option could be offered later in the production run. The vehicle’s suspension pairs nicely with the power, providing a smooth ride while being stiff enough to play well with cornering. The vehicle is carefully weighted, and the steering responsiveness is incredibly accurate. As far as fuel economy is concerned, or if you’re even interested, the Supra earned around 31 mpg highway, 24 mpg city, and 26 mpg combined.

Now let’s talk details! The interior of the Supra comes outfitted with a selection of fine materials. The interior isn’t the most spacious, but it is a sports car. The seats offer a great fit, while great finishes throughout the vehicle add a nice touch. The intuitive infotainment system is pulled directly from BMW, though it plays well with the modern approach of the car. The driver-focused cockpit is tight but comfortable, while the double-bubble roof provides some additional headroom. Cargo space is a bit cramped, though the cargo area in the rear is room enough for a few duffle bags, some groceries, and more. Much of the interior is shared with the Z4, including the BMW switchgear and infotainment controls. The touchscreen infotainment system features a 6.5-inch display, but a larger 8.8-inch display with navigation and Apple CarPlay capability is available. Sound comes from a 12-speaker JBL audio system, which is optional while offering crisp, clear tones throughout the ride.

2020 Toyota Supra: The Legacy Continues

The 2020 Toyota Supra is one of those cars that we’ve been dying to drive. The name has a legacy, and we had to see how this new iteration lived up to the hype. Having driven previous generations of the Supra, the 2020 still has the essence of the earlier editions. The vehicle is fast and fun; it’s agile, nimble, responsive, and, most of all, eye-catching. It might just be the most significant return in the automotive world since it left, and everyone should be excited about its arrival.
