Color & Movement! Josh Sperling’s “Spectrum” Exhibition

Perrotin Hong Kong is back in the news. Recently the gallery launched a solo exhibition by the New York-based artist Josh Sperling. The showcase, entitled “Spectrum,” features a selection of sculptural paintings. Through doses of color and shape, the artist displays a striking array of forms and placement. Expanding on his practice of unique artmaking, the artist has designed abstract pieces that have a particular movement and eye-catching allure.

Sperling uses illusion when it comes to his abstract works. He spoke about his work in a statement to the gallery. The artist stated: “illusion is also very important to me: the underlying structure gives the illusion of something, it is mysterious… When the squiggles are skinnier, they have one central layer, in the middle, they have two, and when they are very large, they have three. That is a result of wanting to give the work an organic life-like feel, like the rings of a tree that grows with layers.”

The works pay homage to fellow artist and friend Frank Stella, known for his shaped paintings. Sperling’s latest showcase is an immersive installation with installations of squiggles. Each piece slowly shifts in hue from red to violet or from orange to yellow.
