Celebrating Art | Vhils Reveals His ‘Pentimento’ Monograph

For fans of art, the name Alexandre Farto is one we should all be familiar with by now. Known in the art world as Vhils, the artist has made a name for himself over the course of two amazing decades. Today the artist is in the news with a new monograph titled Pentimento. The 608-page monograph is the most extensive survey of his work yet. Pentimento is a look back at the past two decades, beginning in 1999 and ending in 2019.

The monograph gets its name from the traces of images, forms, or strokes that appear in original artworks. The work is a showcase of the Portuguese artist’s iconic multi-layered relief portraits. His works come from his technique of “creative destruction”. Through his work, the artist has humanized public spaces via portraits of random passersby. He has always experimented with new materials and mediums, expanding his designs and creativity in the process.

The book also boasts introductory text by Roger Gastman, followed by a long list of Vhils’ works, projects, and shows. There are also never-before-seen items from the archives. For each book sold, Underdogs Gallery and Vhils Studio will be donating €10 between three local charities providing social assistance to people in need during COVID-19. The artist also released a new print edition titled Oxymoron.

Check out a few images of the monograph below and head over to Underdog’s website to pick up your copy immediately. The book is available as a regular unsigned edition, as well as a special version, which includes a slipcase and screenprint. Keep it locked with The Culture Curators for much more from the art department coming very soon.
