Inside The Design! A Look At Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Oasis” Arizona Capitol

For fans of architecture and design, there is no name bigger than Frank Lloyd Wright. Today the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation is back in the news feed. They will soon release a publication that takes a closer look at the “Oasis” Arizona Capitol. The design is one of the architect’s unrealized plans.

For the issue, the Foundation worked with Spanish architect David Romero who created visualizations that offer a look at what the proposed Capital would look like. Using 3D software and techniques, Mr. Romero brings the Oasis State Capitol to life. The design was submitted by Wright back in 1957.

The structure served as a gift to the state, which Wright called home for 20 years. However, the city was divided over the design, calling it “too ornate” and “too expensive.” The Oasis was to be a homage to the desert landscape. The design featured a canopy of copper-plated latticework offering plenty of openings for sunlight, fountains, and more. The design even featured pedestrian transportation included in the structure’s design, boasting moving sidewalks and shuttles.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation released a statement regarding the design. It stated that “One legislator went so far as to say that the Oasis looked like an ‘oriental whorehouse.’”

Take a closer look at the “Oasis” Arizona Capitol in the images and find out more about the Oasis from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. In the meantime, keep it locked with The Culture Curators for more architecture and design coming soon.
