Holy Hobo! He’s at it again, and the new track from the master of making entertainment from manic depression is so sick and incredibly sensible. In what may be some of the most fun he’s ever had in public. Hobo Johnson is back with a surprisingly enjoyable new single “Subaru Crosstrek XV.” This is the third release from his upcoming album, The Fall of Hobo Johnson, set to drop in mid-September.
Johnson has become a fan favorite for his very real recollection of life events growing up in a less than perfect, but all too familiar, home. Once again, he brings the real on this track too. However, this time, it’s about his practical and responsible decision about car ownership. “Subaru Crosstrek XV” proves that witty lyrics over a well-produced beat just work, no matter the subject. I may write about dream rides and track eating supercars. But personally I’ve got a soft spot for the sport wagon Johnson pays tribute to. The track is a light-hearted cut about making a sound decision in a pretentious world.

Has this beat been mentioned yet? It’s so damn fun. A few synth keys, a strum of a cello, and a bass line all build to become an infectious beat that will have you bouncing in the seat of whatever you might be driving. Subaru or not. Lyrically, it’s a bit of what we’ve grown to love from the high strung songwriter, producer, and rapper, but the final product is a little different. This time there’s a less emotionally straining vibe though.
Hobo Johnson actually sounds like he’s having fun and growing into his meager popularity. A rapper acknowledging he’s more like us than some sort of socio-economic god of hip hop. Which is something we can all relate to. The fact he throws some real-world review and advice for owning a “Subaru Crosstrek XV” only goes to show you he’s probably being super truthful too.
If this album maintains the feels the first three singles have delivered, this could be one of the albums we remember for years. You know, after a couple of kids, driving to Chili’s celebrating the sensible purchase. We all deserve new to you certified pre-owned Subaru Crosstrek XV, with the upgraded suspension package.
