Making Changes | CFDA Has Announced Fashion Industry Anti-Racism Initiatives

The Council of Fashion Designers of America, also known as the CFDA, is back in the news. The council has released a new set of initiatives that address systematic racism in fashion. In a statement co-signed by Tom Ford (Chairman) and Steven Kolb (President and CEO), several new programs will be implemented immediately. Those include an in-house employment program, a mentorship program, and more. T

he statement speaks further about these points. In terms of an in-house employment program, it reads: “The CFDA will create an in-house employment program specifically charged with placing Black talent in all sectors of the fashion business to help achieve a racially balanced industry. This program will be tasked with identifying Black creatives and pairing these individuals with companies looking to hire.” The statement goes on to say, “The CFDA will also create a mentorship program and an internship program focused on placing Black students and recent graduates within established companies in the fashion sector.”

Speaking on diversity and inclusion training, it adds, “The CFDA will implement and make available to our members a Diversity and Inclusion training program.” The CFDA is also urging members to “take stock of their corporate structure,” aiming to ensure a racially balanced workforce. They also called for retailers to do the same.

The statement also spoke about fundraising efforts. It reads, “We will make immediate contributions and take up fundraising activities in support of charitable organizations aimed at equalizing the playing field for the Black community such as, but not limited to the NAACP and Campaign Zero – amongst others.”

This is undoubtedly a big move, and one we hope makes significant changes. Stay tuned with The Culture Curators for more lifestyle and culture news coming very soon.
