The one and only, the talented, the business-savvy, and incredibly gifted, Jay-Z is back. The wordsmith invaded the interwebs this weekend with a brand new track, hopping on a track with Pharrell called “Entrepreneur.” The new track was released in conjunction with Pharrell’s new TIME cover package, “The New American Revolution.”
The song was produced by The Neptunes, of course, and finds Hov and Pharrell showcasing their respective talents. However, the track is about more than just these two incredible artists giving us something new to rock with. The single, “Entrepreneur,” speaks on racism and systematic injustice, relaying an important message in the process.
Pharrell opened up about the single in his interview with TIME. He stated: “The intention for the song was about how tough it is to be an entrepreneur in our country, to begin with.” Mr. Williams went on to say, “Especially as someone of color, there’s a lot of systemic disadvantages and purposeful blockages. How can you get a fire started, or even the hope of an ember to start a fire when you’re starting at disadvantages with regards to health care, education, and representation?”

The was released with a matching video directed by CALMATIC, highlighting black entrepreneurs around the world. Pharrell also stated: “When you have successful beehive-type communities where you can circulate money within your community, it makes a huge difference.” The producer, singer/songwriter, and more added, “They keep saying the American Dream is about the house and picket fence, the wife and two kids. Come on—let’s be honest. It’s always boiled down to money and an opportunity.”
