Big Sean – Overtime

For the better part of two years, we haven’t heard much from Big Sean. The wordsmith has been largely quiet since dropping off his collaborative project with Metro Boomin back in 2017.

In March of this year, Big Sean resurfaced, revealing that he had been feeling lost and has been learning to rediscover himself with the help of therapy. Today Big Sean is back with a brand new single for our listening enjoyment called “Overtime.”

The track finds Big Sean hitting us with his smooth, effortless delivery, getting down over top of of a smooth instrumental from Hit-Boy, Key Wane and Stro. He speaks about his mental state and his breakup with Jhené Aiko, rapping: “Shit, I didn’t take a break, my n***a, I broke/ Broke my heart, broke my soul, don’t cry for me though/ If you don’t break nothing down, then it’s no room to grow/ One mental block leads to another, shit is dominoes.” He even opens up about getting his own day in Detroit, adding “So legendary, I’ma probably need a day/ Forgot I already got one, be dammed if I’m not one”), and everything in between.”

Big Sean also spoke with Zane Lowe recently, opening up about getting back into music. Big Sean stated: “I just been returning to my roots, bro. I’ve just been getting back to having fun with it.” He added, “At one point I felt like it might have started to become like a burden, or like work, but now it’s just fun. So this is just me having fun, expressing myself. It was a time well spent. I never really knew how important it was to take some time for myself and get myself right.”

Big Sean closes out his new single with a verse that presumably teases a Detroit 2 release, but only time will tell. Check out Big Sean’s new single, “Overtime” in the stream below and be sure to stay tuned for more new music, and hopefully more from Big Sean coming soon.
