Classics & Customs | Icon 1970 Ford Ranger Truck

LA-based Icon 4×4 restoration specialists have earned a reputation for builds so rad they’ve reformed the way restoration builds are viewed. And it’s jaw dropping-ly obvious in their aptly named “Reformer” project series. The purpose of the Reformer Projects is simple, at least from 10ft away. They take classic vehicles from any manufacturer and nearly any era, they re-imagine them for modern use. Stay faithful to the original aesthetic design, and in some cases, ask what was the purest intended form of the design in the eyes of the original designer, before the business priorities made sacrifices in design and detail, then rewrite history. Eliminate the archaic mechanical elements to allow users to get the best of both worlds; classic styling and modern performance to create a daily driver with timeless style, modern functionality, and environmental consciousness. Today we get a look at their 1970 Ford Ranger Truck.

The most recent addition to the Reformer Project build list is everything they set out to accomplish with the concept. An absolute icon in the world of vintage 4×4. The 1970 Ford Ranger. Before being banished to the small pick-up truck realm, the Ranger badge was reserved for the Top Trim of the. F-150. Icon reminds us of that with this stunning build. The style of overdone opulence in today’s full-size truck market never would’ve flown back in ‘70. So, Icon appropriately recreated the upholstery while keeping everything factory af, right down to the manual roll-up windows.

Once you pop the hood, you’ll realize Granddad’s ole slant six didn’t make the cut. A 5-liter Coyote V8 makes 426 horsepower to all four wheels via a Ford AOD transmission, new transfer case, and Dana axles. Fox shocks and Eibach springs pair with a Brembo brake system to give the truck modern handling and rock-crawling off-road performance. In true Icon style, this classic piece of Americana can probably outrun anything you’d buy new off the dealer lot with a hell of a lot more style.
