A Look Inside | “Peter Saul: Crime and Punishment” At The New Museum

After announcing the launch of a major showcase of Peter Saul’s work, the New Museum is back. This time around, they provide us with a closer look at the exhibition. The survey, entitled “Peter Saul: Crime and Punishment,” features over 60 paintings that span the artist’s career. The exhibition offers a look at his ability to shed light on socio-political issues. It also features a look into his bold paintings that were inspired by pop art and surrealists.

His earlier works incorporated text, recognizable characters, and consumer products. He also captured the brutality, racism, and destruction of the Vietnam War. Continuing to challenge American history, Saul’s work ranges from paintings of infamous criminals to archetypes of cowboys and business people. There are even political caricatures of artists such as Francisco Goya and William Hogarth that reflect on the surrealist creations of Dali. Saul’s brightly colored paintings are vivid and unique, offering something humorous and thought-provoking. “Crime and Punishment” examines Saul’s blend of surrealist aesthetics, history, and more.

Take a closer look inside “Peter Saul: Crime and Punishment” in the gallery below and find out more from the New Museum about the exhibition immediately. The showcase will be on display from now until May 31st. Keep it locked with The Culture Curators for more from the art department coming very soon.
