Art x Craft | Balenciaga & Harry Nuriev Create The ‘Balenciaga Sofa’

Known for bold style and forward-thinking fashion, Balenciaga is back in the news. They have announced a new collaboration with Harry Nuriev, a New York-based artist, architect, and furniture designer. Together they have created the ‘Balenciaga Sofa.’ This unique sofa was created for Design Miami 2019, constructed from discarded Balenciaga clothing. The sofa was chosen as the basis for the collaboration, as it is the center of many people’s homes.

The design features a transparent vinyl material encasing damaged or unsellable pieces and off-cuts from old Balenciaga stock. The pieces visible through the vinyl are clearly Balenciaga, with labels, patterns, and logos on display. Balenciaga explained that it was “intended to encourage sustainable practices within design and elsewhere.” They went on to add that “the piece reflects Balenciaga’s recognition of the responsibility designers have to counterbalance their environmental impact and dedication to implementing programs that upcycle waste and contribute to a circular economy.”

Check out the Balenciaga Sofa in the gallery below and keep an eye open for much more from Balenciaga coming very soon. In the meantime, stay tuned with The Culture Curators for more from Design Miami coming very soon. Check out the piece for yourself in South Florida starting on December 3rd.
