Art x Inclusion | Emily Mae Smith Unveils The “Avalon” Exhibition

Art has a captivating allure for some of us. New York-based artist Emily Mae Smith has a distinct style and an eye-catching aesthetic that we can’t seem to get enough of. The artist is holding her first-ever Japanese showcase at Perrotin Tokyo. The exhibition entitled “Avalon,” shows her off her blend of Surrealism, Pop Art and Symbolism. She was born in Texas, and her works comment on current politics and society.

She is known for her signature character, the broomstick-inspired art piece inspired by Disney‘s 1940 film Fantasia. The collection includes Smith’s Art Nouveau graphics drawn from Disney, as well as references of her political point-of-view. Her art is compelling and unique, challenging, questioning rand depicting gender, sexuality, capitalism, violence, and more. Smith stated that the broom is “this very lowly thing that became very powerful when someone tried to control it”. The artist tells the story of an uprising, representing the labor put upon women.

The message comes to life in the exhibition “Avalon,” which offers a look into everything including psychedelia to eroticism.
