A Two-fer | Powerhouse Brattorkaia

Generally speaking, we’re captivated by architecture strictly based on design cues. Today we get a look at a building that is both visually appealing, as well as incredibly functional.  Powerhouse Brattorkaia overlooks the Trondheim Fjord and serves as the world’s northernmost energy-positive structure. This massive office building is clad in black aluminum and 3,000-square-metres of solar panels.

The position of the structure, the facade, and the pentagonal roof were carefully designed in order to collect the maximum amount of solar energy possible. This allows the building to produce more than two times the amount of electricity it consumes daily. The extra clean energy is then sent to a local micro-grid to power buildings, electric buses, cars, and boats. The building serves as a miniature power plant, while the interior also adds to the efficiency of the design. The building includes proper insulation, smart air-flow solutions, heat recovery systems, and minimal use of artificial light. This stunning design might just be the future of going green. Think about the possibilities that buildings of this, providing power to nearby areas and supplementing the power grid as we know it in the process. Seems like a brilliant idea.
