Friends & Family! Perrotin Unveils Exhibition on Mark Rothko & Hans Hartung

After WWII, Europe and the United States were battling for control of the art market. Two of its biggest figures, Mark Rothko and Hans Hartung, had formed a secret friendship, one that is honored and on display at Perrotin Paris. Dubbed “Rothko — Hartung: Une Amitié Multiforme,” the exhibition is curated by designer Thomas Schlesser.

The showcase is a presentation of works that exemplify the two artists flawlessly. Alluring and raw, the collection offers a striking look into their creativity and friendship. Rothko was born in the Russian Empire in 1903, while Schlesser was born the year after in Germany. Both were exiled from their home countries and admired the works of Rembrandt and the music of the 18th Century.

In 1963 Perrotin featured four paintings by Hartung, which mirror N014 Browns over Dark by Mark Rothko. The paintings are now on display at the gallery courtesy of Musée national d’art moderne-Centre Pompidou. The show will also include photographic portraits Hartung took of Mark and Mary Alice Rothko during his visit to New York in 1964.

“Rothko — Hartung: Une Amitié Multiforme” is currently on display at Perrotin Paris until July 31st. Find out more information from Perrotin immediately and keep it locked with The Culture Curators for more from the art department coming very soon.
