No Spoilers | Moustache Johnny Breaks Down ‘The Righteous Gemstones’

HBO is no stranger to binge-worthy and schedule altering original content. With that Dragon and Murder show wrapped up and out of the way, It’s time to add to the list of giants like the Sopranos, Deadwood, Eastbound and Down, and many others. From the creative team behind “Vice Principals” and “Eastbound and Down” comes a new comedy about a celebrity televangelist family behind a big money megachurch. ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ features Danny McBride as Jesse Gemstone in a role he seems ordained to play.

Edi Patterson and Adam Devine are the siblings of the oldest son awaiting his turn at the pulpit. John Goodman is the pastor of the mega congregation and patriarch behind the Gemstone family. A rollercoaster of salvation and scandal locks us from the drop. McBride is right at home with the creative team behind his former successful runs as Kenny Powers and Neal Gamby. Edi Patterson was a fan favorite in “Vice Principals” with McBride, and the chemistry between them is heaven-sent.

Adam Devine brings his signature innocence and annoying little brother vibe to a family unit that John Goodman wants so desperately to keep the reins on. The devil is in the details with this dark, witty comedy that promises to deepen as the story plays out. A certain punch-ability is the same flawed character we begin to fall in love with from the jump.

The series has the pedigree to be epic, and so far, it’s praiseworthy and righteous indeed. ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ airs Sundays any 10:00 and streaming to HBO GO and HBO NOW subscriptions, finding it won’t be a problem. Not hearing about it Monday morning might be a much more difficult task soon, however.
