Take A Look! Claudia Bitrán Opens “Stereotypies” Exhibition

‘Stereotypy’ is defined as “frequent repetition of the same, typically purposeless movement, gesture, posture, or vocal sounds or utterances.” This is also the basis of a new solo exhibition by Chilean-American artist Claudia Bitrán. The artist recently opened the “Stereotypies” exhibition at Cristin Tierney Gallery in New York. The showcase includes three separate bodies of work which are united by a phenomenon central to each.

The Brooklyn-based artist uses various images of people and animals as her source material, creating paintings and animations that explore the relationship between pop culture and contemporary art. In one series, the artist recreated portraits of Britney Spears sourced from fan photos and paparazzi snapshots. Another features a suite of paintings and animations of drunk people and their viral escapades.

By photographing the work and using the still to make frame-by-frame animations, Bitrán covers the idea of stereotypy by adding an endless cycle of repetition. The show aims to speak on modern society’s consumption of images and narratives. Bitrán invites the viewer to reassess the figures and the larger cycle of mass consumption through her artist lens.

“Stereotypies” will be on display at Cristin Tierney Gallery from March 11 to April 16, 2022. Find out more about the exhibition from Cristin Tierney Gallery and keep it locked with The Culture Curators for more art news and art exhibitions coming very soon.
