The Come Back | Vinyl On Pace To Outsell CDs

The popularity of vinyl has grown exponentially over the years. According to the Recording Industry Association of America‘s (RIAA) recent Music Revenues Report, vinyl is on track to outsell CD sales for the first time in three decades. Although the report offers insight into streaming revenue, which makes up the bulk of industry income, it also shows the state of physical sales. While vinyl sales are still quite low, record sales are on the rise.

The report says that record sales have risen $224.1 million USD when compared to last year, though that only makes up 4% of overall revenue during the first half of the year. Compared to CD’s revenue of $247.9 million, there is certainly a shift in sales. Over the past few years, we’ve seen more and more record stores popping up. We’ve also seen some of our favorite new albums being released on vinyl. If vinyl continues its pace, it will outpace CDs for the first time since 1986 when records sold 58.8 million units over 18.6 million CDs.

This is certainly interesting news and a showcase of the shift back to records. Head over to the RIAA for more on their Music Revenues Report. Do you own vinyl? What made you start your collection?
