The Future Of Flight | Airbus’ Bird of Prey Concept Aircraft

The evolution of flight has seen modern tech take the lead. However, Airbus is looking to the birds for their latest inspiration, unleashing a bird-like concept known as the Bird of Prey. Airbus’ Bird of Prey is a conceptual aircraft that features wing and tail structures that boast individually controlled feather-like tips. These functional and eye-catching features assist with control while minimizing drag.

The concept also includes a smooth wing root, designed to imitate the aerodynamics of an eagle or a falcon. These feathered tips are decorated with the pattern of a union jack, contrasting the orange body with details of blue, white and gold on the wings. The Bird of Prey concept is based on realistic ideas, showing off what the future of aviation might look like, as well as the potential of biomimicry.

Martin Aston, a senior manager at Airbus, stated: “Our Bird of Prey is designed to be an inspiration to young people and create a ‘wow’ factor that will help them consider an exciting career in the crucially important aerospace sector.” He added, “One of the priorities for the entire industry is how to make aviation more sustainable – making flying cleaner, greener and quieter than ever before.” The design as first revealed at the Royal International Air Tattoo air show in Gloucestershire, England, showcasing a hybrid-electric, turbo-propeller aircraft intended for regional air transportation.

The hybrid-electric propulsion system would burn 30 to 50 percent less fuel than traditional airlines, also providing optimal low-speed performance. Take a look at this unique concept in the images below and head over to Airbus to learn more about the Bird of Prey concept immediately.
