The Italian design brand Cassina is back with something big. The label has revealed a collection of “building blocks” designed by Virgil Abloh. The collection is entitled “Modular Imagination” and is made of two different-sized block structures that can be combined. Their uses are ambiguous as the pieces can be placed side by side or on their own. Form anything from side tables to a long bench; the choice is yours. Abloh designed a connecting module that allows its contrasting orange cylindrical feet to slot into the top of the below unit to join the pieces.
The pieces are designed to sit comfortably in any setting, boasting an industrial aesthetic. On the side of each piece is a reference to Abloh’s signature graphic style, as a distinctive “Cassina-Abloh” round logo is noticed. The collection was made in conjunction with Abloh and the brand’s research arm, Cassina LAB. The system also features a dotted line under the unit’s feet, which indicates where the soft upholstery can be cut away from its recycled wooden core, which means each piece can be recycled separately. The brand stated: “In complete respect of Virgil Abloh’s work, Modular Imagination enters the Cassina catalog, emphasizing the value of this project that does not aim to be a limited drop but attests the quality of his work within the design world.” They went on to add, “Virgil Abloh was in fact particularly proud of this project that began development in 2020 and was completed before his premature passing.”
Cassina will present the pieces in an installation in its flagship store in Milan. The installation is open to the public during Milan Design Week and will be available in Cassina stores and other retailers.
