We’ve seen more than a few modern takes on the classic cabin. Today we get a look at one of the most unique yet, the Ashen Cabin. This unique structure was created by the U.S. architecture studio Hannah, using 3D-printed concrete stilts to elevate the dwelling. The tiny off-grid cabin is located in Upstate New York, boasting infested ash wood walls, hence the name. The design offers a sustainable construction that combines lumbar destroyed by an invasive beetle with digital fabrication techniques.
The exterior is host to wavy wood panels and windows framed with black plywood. This contrasting approach stands out in its natural setting. Concrete forms the tall chimney and legs of the cabin, while a 3D printing system stacks the layers of concrete to create the angular base. Over time the home will take on a unique patina. The wood boards will naturally grey, and the siding will blend with the color of the concrete. The cabin has no power or running water. However, there is a small camping sink made with the coiling concrete that provides water. It does include foam insulation and a wood-burning fireplace.
