It’s always worth mentioning when Porsche pulls the sheet off of anything new. The unveiling of the 2021 911 Porsche Targa 4 and 4S is certainly something special though. The drop-top iteration of the Eighth-gen 911 is poetry in motion even when parked. The 911 Targa 2.0 was a byproduct of 1960’s anti-rollover highway safety regulations. Originally touted as a safe cabriolet with a roll bar, the Targa emerged as a fun daily driver and canyon carver as well.
That same spirit embodies today’s version but a tech update brings it up to speed with modern needs. The Targa 4 is powered by a 3.0L flat-six with twin turbochargers. The 911 Targa 4 now sees 385 hp and can accelerate to 100km/h in 4.2 seconds while the 911 Targa 4S packs 450 hp and can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. 8-Speed dual clutch transmissions and intelligent all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management are equipped in both models. There is an option for an all new 7-Speed manual gearbox.
All of those fun features but my favorite may just be the mechanically retracting fabric roof and fixed rear window. Watching the Targa 4 and 4S transform from closed to open in less than 20 beautifully choreographed seconds is as mesmerizing as watching a sunset. Seeing the roof dance with the rear window until it perfectly tucks into the wide body design is utter satisfaction. The signature silver roll bar just seems to tie it all in completely.
Porsche is launching the 2021 911 Porsche Targa 4 and 4S with a price tag upwards of $120k for the 4 and $135k for the 4S. Full specs and option lists are available at Porsche.com.
