Hobo Johnson – Ugly Kid Ft. Elohim

Everybody’s favorite awkward, socially crippled little brother is back with a painfully perfect banger just in time for the back to school blues. With the upcoming September release of his sophomore album, the rapper, vocalist, producer, multi-instrumental, poet, Hobo Johnson hits home with the video release of his newest single “Ugly Kid” featuring Elohim. The songstress adds a soothing melody to the unbelievably chill beat while Hobo Johnson brings us back to a painful childhood we swore we were over. At least we told our therapist that we were.

The lovable little scamp once again lightheartedly addresses some of the emotions we’ve all suppressed for so long. The video, directed by Taylor Fauntleroy, subtly plays with social definitions of what’s pretty and the otherwise ugly side. From injections to dental work and oiled up muscles, the efforts put into beauty are on blast. The side-scrolling video stays a little trippy and delivers an evolving love affair with a beautiful leading lady mixed amongst the uncomfortable fun.

The production for this song is a jazzy groove with an array of instruments that play beautifully off the voice of Elohim. As if to make sure it doesn’t go unnoticed, Johnson reminds us, “Listen to this f**king trumpet! HOLY S**T!” And I’m glad he does. The song has a fun way of addressing an issue so many young people struggle with. “The new album is a mix of songs and poems I’ve had floating around in my head for the last few years,” the singer says of the new record. “I’m really proud of it and hope that it makes everyone feel a little less alone and a little more like they want to stay alive.”

The single is available on streaming services and the video can be found in the stream below. Hobo Johnson’s new album is set to release September 13th. You can also hear the track on ‘A Curation of Sound Pt. 2,’ the latest installment of our weekend playlist.
