It’s Lit | NASA To Light Up The Sky For Apollo 11’s 50th Anniversary

NASA is gearing up to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. The space agency has a bevy of plans in store to celebrate this momentous milestone, one of which will include a pack of drones and an artistic visual display from the creative minds at Studio Drift. After suspending a massive concrete structure at their landmark Helsinki exhibition, Studio Drift is prepping to send 300 lighted drones into the night sky for an immersive experience while celebrating 50 years since the first lunar landing.

The tech-assisted performance is entitled ‘Franchise Freedom,’ which will take place at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex alongside a live music performance by Duran Duran. The drones’ movements are inspired by the natural flight patterns of birds, doing so while employing special program software to develop an algorithm that will send the miniature flying robots to create a unique visual experience. Ralph Nauta, an artist at Studio Drift, spoke about the exhibit. He stated: “The Apollo 11 moon landing exemplifies how technology can have a positive effect on humanity. Let’s take this as an example of what amazing possibilities we have if we put our minds together. It is our responsibility to use technology to build a sustainable future.”

The performance will commemorate the historic moon landing, marking the fourth installment by Studio Drift. Previously their drones have transformed the night sky at Art Basel Miami 2017, Burning Man Festival, and Amsterdam. ‘Franchise Freedom’ will launch on July 16th and tickets for the event can be purchased at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Take a look at the short video below and start making your plans for this incredible experience right now.
