On The Edge | The Verdon Balconies

Modern architecture and design is aiming to reshape the future. For climbers around the world, there are a few must-climb walls on the planet. One of those is France’s Verdon Gorge, a steep gorge with limestone walls. The location features river canyon’s cliffs reach over 2,000 feet, a perfect destination for multi-pitch climbing. The destination is a popular option for experienced climbers, providing a challenging and incredible adventure in the process. Christophe Benichou designed a place to offer climbers a resting spot, providing the Verdon Balconies.

These unique platforms were inspired by portaledge structures. The metal perches would be suspended from the rock as a place to take a break or even sleep. The design also aims to provide shelter from the wind and falling stones. The lightweight construction also allows for easy removal in the future. These balconies are a great way to change climbing, also making it more accessible to some. Take a look at the unique and thoughtful designs in the images below.
