Rare Michelangelo Drawing To Go Up For Auction

A rare and previously unrecognized drawing by Michelangelo will soon be hitting the auction block. Michelangelo is remembered as an artist and painter. This rare drawing has been in private hands since it was first sold in 1907. The drawing was first thought to be a product of the school of Michelangelo. Christie’s former specialist in Old Master Drawings, Furio Rinaldi, confirmed it to be a drawing by the artist back in 2019.

Stijn Alsteens, Christie’s international head of the department of Old Master drawings, stated: “The drawing is one of the best of fewer than ten works on paper by Michelangelo still in private hands, and will become a touchstone for every discussion of the early part of the artist’s long career.” The drawing is loosely based on a fresco in the Brancacci chapel in Florence by Masaccio. The single-lot sale will take place on May 18th in Paris at 8 am ET.

Take a closer look at the drawing in the image up top and head over to Christie’s to find out more. In the meantime, keep it locked with The Culture Curators for more art drops and art news coming very soon.
